New Braunfels Brewing Co. Texas, has become the target of a complaint over beers that name- check the Hindu deity Shiva. Rajan Zed, a Hindu activist whose previous grievances have targeted singer Selena Gomez and the video game Overwatch, released a statement urging New Braunfels Brewing to pull three of its beers from the market: Shiva’s Tears, Wrath of Shiva and Cosmic Dancer. “Lord Shiva was highly revered in Hinduism, and he was meant to be worshiped in temples or home shrines and not to be used in selling beer,” the letter says Zed, the president of Universal Society of Hinduism. Kelly Meyer, who started New Braunfels Brewing with his wife, Lindsey, in 2012, said Zed’s complaint is misplaced. Asked if he will pull Shiva’s Tears or Wrath of Shiva from the market, Meyer said, “The answer is‘Hell, no.’” |
Sierra Nevada has announced a 36-state voluntary recall of several of its year-round and seasonal beers bottled at the company’s North Carolina brewery. Sierra Nevada, the third largest U.S. craft brewery, issued the recall after quality inspections at its Mills River, N.C. facility revealed “a very limited number of bottles with a flaw that may cause a small piece of glass to break off and possibly fall into the bottle, creating a risk for injury,” according to a press release. Sierra Nevada said roughly 1 in every 10,000 12 oz. glass bottles packaged between Dec. 5 and January 13 were affected. Brands included in the recall have the letter “M” stamped on the bottle’s shoulder and include: Pale Ale, Beer Camp Golden IPA, Sidecar Orange Pale, Torpedo Extra IPA, Nooner, Tropical Torpedo, Hop Hunter and Otra Vez Consumers who purchased beer are encouraged to dispose of the beer and file a claim for a full refund at http://sierranevada.com/qualitymatters. |

About Time - As of January 1st, breweries throughout Tennessee can now serve beers up to 10.1 percent alcohol by volume, or 8 percent by weight, without seeking a license through the Alcoholic Beverage Commission. The old alcohol by volume limit was 6.3 percent, or 5 percent by weight. Old Is New - Miller HIgh Life a staple of old time beer is becoming craft. Off Color Brewing collaborated with Miller brewers for a beer called Eeek! that blends the High Life ingredients with Off Color's wild yeast to produce a farmhouse HL. |
| Shower Beer You don't need to be a college frat star to understand the joys of shower drinking (but it helps). For reasons unknown a brewery in Sweden is capitalizing on their belief in the beauty of a warm shower and a cold beer by brewing Shower Beer, a pale ale purposefully crafted to perfect your shower-drinking experience. The Shower Beer is half the size of a typical beer (six ounces as opposed to the usual 12) to facilitate quick drinking for a fast shower. Perhaps most impressive is that the beer comes in at ten percent alcohol by volume. It was created by Swedish brewery PangPang in collaboration with creative agency Snask. Officially the beer is meant to be finished "in three sips while standing in the shower getting ready for the night," the Snask founder Fredrik Ost said. "It's the ultimate in multitasking." He allegedly said that with a straight face. I let the Shower Beer sit longer in the primary fermenter before dry hopping and cold crashing it, compared to other PangPang beers," the Pang Pang head brewer said. "This lets it develop a soapy flavor that in some beers is considered an 'off' flavor, but is just on point for the Shower Beer . The beer is heavily hopped with citrus, and has a citrussy, soapy, and somewhat herbal profile. According to the brewer ithe recipe was designed so that it can also be us as a conditioner. The beer's slogan: "If you are into looking good and feeling good, this is the beer for you!" After the first batch of Shower Beer sold out in one minute the brewery began fermenting a second, much larger batch. It will soon be available to purchase in the UK and the USA.
