Abdication Beer

Dutch Brewers have stepped in to celebrate the
man who just became king after a reputedly
boozy time as a student at Leiden university that
earned him the nickname “Prince Pils,’ after the
Pilsner type of lager.  The brewers have
produced a limited edition beer honouring the
new monarch and his abdicating mother, Queen
Beatrix.  The  brew is called “Abdication Beer”,
has proved so successful that British brewer
Steve Gammage upped his initial production of
1000 litres to 10 000 litres. Not to be outdone,
Royal-themed products have come from many
other manufacturers.  Perhaps the most
unexpected unusual was a manhole cover with a
commemorative drain cover featuring the royal
couple’s silhouette.The company, Aquafix
Milieu, has given a manhole to each of the
Netherlands 408 districts, and one has already
been laid on Amsterdam’s main Dam square.

Tasting Record

A Netherlands pub is now the former holder of
the Guinness World Record for the  largest beer
tasting (267) participants.  The new record
belongs to Hough's Taproom in Pittsburgh with
294 participant.  To qualify each taster is given
four different beers in unmarked bottles to drink
and compare.  Hough's used four brews from
the Flying Dog Brewery in setting the record..
You don't say.....

The first non-alcoholic beer came from ancient Egypt.  A
priestess would create a strong ale, then heat it over a fire.
The alcohol would burn off, and rise to make the goddess
Hathor very drunk.  The remaining non-alcoholic beer
was sold to the public

Oregon really loves yeast. The state has started the process
of naming the beer yeast strain, Saccharomyces cerevisiae,
as the official state microbe. To no one surprise, they will be
the first and only US state with an official microbe.
Ya gotta love these guys
